Community Supermarket

The Overwaitea Food Group has been an integral part of the Mission community since 1927, when they first opened their doors on First Avenue. Since then they have changed location a total of 5 times, which included our very own Economic Development Office on Welton Street, until settling in their current site at The Junction Mall with Save-On-Foods.

With a strong focus on BC goods, they really optimize the shop local philosophy promoting local produce within the stores, as well as a commitment to sustainable, ocean friendly seafood. Their conscience does not stop there, as they are driven by a desire to offer the best levels of customer service and to contribute and be part of the local community.  This viewpoint also resonates with the staff, with long term employees ranking between 10 to 25 years of service.

Store Manager, Jim Shaw, is a Mission resident who grew up here and was glad to return to the locale which holds fond memories and good friends. He sees this as an opportunity to rekindle old friendships and develop new ones, to be give back to the community and to donate to groups and organizations that include those he remembers from his youth.

Last year the store donated thousands of dollars to Mission through in-kind donations and a very long list of groups that include sports teams, schools and not-for –profit organizations. Those benefiting have included the Mission Hospice, Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, School Fruit & Vegetable Program, The Starfish Program, Zajac Ranch, Mission Seniors, Fraser Valley Humane Society, Mission Minor Hockey, Mission Football and many more; highlighting the diversity of community members and groups that have been able to benefit from the stores generosity.

Building relationships and a lasting presence in a community go hand in hand according to Shaw, and this is why Save On Foods are one of Mission’s longest standing businesses who are still going strong today.
